Start with the input you already have
Claude Code documents voice dictation, and Cursor documents voice input in its prompting guide. Availability and controls can depend on the version and account you use. Check those instructions before adding another tool.
A separate dictation app is worth evaluating when you want a similar shortcut across several writing surfaces. The first question is whether it inserts text reliably into your specific panel—not how many app logos appear on a landing page.

Run the same prompt through each option
Use a harmless task in a practice repository. Here is an illustrative prompt you can adapt:
“Inspect the empty-state component. Explain why the heading wraps on a narrow screen. Propose a CSS-only change, keep the existing button label and do not change the signup handler. Show the proposed diff before applying it.”
This draft contains a task, context, a constraint and a review step. Those details matter more than a headline words-per-minute estimate.
- Place the cursor in the exact panel you use.
- Dictate the draft and wait for the completed transcript.
- Compare each instruction with what you meant to say.
- Correct omissions, names and punctuation before submitting.
- Include setup and correction effort when comparing the two workflows.
A fluent-looking paragraph can still contain a consequential error. Check “do not change” just as carefully as a file path.
Three checks for coding workflows
The destination field
Editor chat, inline edit and terminal input are different surfaces. Test each one you intend to use. Halopen relies on Mac text insertion; Accessibility permission, focus, Secure Input and custom widgets can affect delivery. It does not establish compatibility with every terminal or editor version.
For Codex CLI or Aider, start terminal experiments in a notes editor. An accidental newline or misheard flag can change executable input. Review commands before moving them into a shell.
Exact technical strings
Names such as useUserData, created_at and --no-verify are good review targets. Dictate the explanation around them, then type or paste exact strings when that is easier. In supported Cloud routes, enabled vocabulary hints can provide dictionary entries. Optional text context has separate controls; see privacy details.
The live partial preview is provisional. Restating a misread term does not guarantee replacement of the earlier text, and the final transcript may differ from the preview.
Output mode and recovery

Build a prompt worth reviewing
For a larger request, separate the draft into four parts:
- Context: the file, feature or behavior you want examined.
- Task: the concrete change or investigation.
- Constraints: what must be preserved and what is out of scope.
- Verification: the result or check that would demonstrate success.
This structure is useful whether you type or dictate. It does not prove that voice produces better prompts or that an agent will follow every instruction.
