Halopen — hold-to-talk dictation for Mac

Halopen is a native macOS dictation app. Hold the configured key, speak naturally and release. It is designed to insert the completed transcript into a compatible Mac text field. Verbatim is the default output mode; optional cleanup is your choice.

Start with one draft

Open Apple Notes, place the cursor in a note and dictate a short paragraph. Confirm that Microphone and Accessibility access are enabled if the app requests them. Read what arrived before trying the input field you use for work.

Different apps and fields can behave differently. Focus changes, Secure Input and custom widgets can affect insertion. If text does not appear, check the app’s recovery controls and the dictation troubleshooting guide.

What “Verbatim by default” means

The aim is to preserve the speaker’s wording without an optional cleanup pass. It is a mode choice, not an accuracy guarantee. Speech recognition can mishear names, omit details, change punctuation or struggle with a language switch.

Try a representative sentence containing the names and vocabulary you actually use. Compare the completed transcript with what you intended. If you choose Polish or Editorial, review the rewritten text as well.

Choose your processing mode

Halopen offers local speech recognition and Cloud transcription. They have different processing and data boundaries. Cloud features can use vocabulary hints and optional text context; local speech recognition processes the recording on your Mac. Account, licensing, updates and enabled diagnostics have separate network behavior.

Temporary local audio and eligible failed recordings have retention behavior described on the privacy page. The local transcript and event log is useful for inspecting supported app activity; it is not a monitor of every network request.
